Eagerly Awaiting August

So, it’s been almost one whole year since I last featured Eagerly Awaiting. What can I say? I don’t pre-order all that often!! So without further ado, here’s what’s on my pre-orders list for the month of August 2015.

Oh my goodness, have any of you read Chew? This series of comic books is completely insane and I love it! Anthony Chew is a cibopath- he can’t eat any food (except beets, yup) without getting flashbacks about what happened to said food before it landed on his plate. Think burger= cow in slaughter house.

He works for the FDA (the food and drug administration- the US’s highest law enforcement department) and has been getting up to some freaky food-related crime solving with his partner, John Colby. Oh, and did I forget to mention that in this alternate universe, chicken is banned and dealing in it is now a major crime?

Throw in some other weird food related powers including the ability to describe food so accurately that your readers can actually taste what you’re describing, a sinister Russian (or Serbian, who knows?) criminal known as “The Vampire” and frog/chicken hybrids known quite simply as Chogs and you’ve got yourself a recipe for complete and utter craziness.

Rob Guillory and John Layman are a pair of evil geniuses. Chew 10 is out on the 20th August and I CANNOT wait for it to arrive through my post box.

The hardcover edition of This Shattered World came out in December 2014 but my poor bookshelves can’t take the weight of any more hardbacks (they’re fixed to plasterboard against some pretty crumbly early 19th century brick walls) and so I’ve pre-ordered the paperback which isn’t out until 23rd December 2015! No problems though as I haven’t actually read the first book in this series; These Broken Stars.

Yeah, I’ve pre-ordered this book because the cover is pretty. Really, there is no other reason. I mean, it’s luck that I’ve read some good reviews since but the original motivation was entirely as a result of judging that book by it’s cover. No regrets, I mean just look at the cover- so pretty!

The Starbound series is written by Amie Kaufman and Megan Spooner.

I read the first three books in The Lunar Chronicles over the space of just a couple of days. The story of Cinder, a cyborg mechanic on the run from the law as part of an elaborate attempt to save the Earth from a Moon-dwelling queen bent on world domination, is such a fun space-romp that I couldn’t put it down.

The series is a futuristic take on the tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood and Rapunzel (so far) set against the backdrop of tensions between the Earth nations and the Lunar government on the moon. Winter is the next instalment and if the previous three books are anything to go on then I think that this one will be a corker! Winter is out on the 2nd December 2015.

On a related noted, fans of the books have been designated Lunartics. How cute is that? Also, if you are fan and living in the US, Marissa Meyer’s publisher is running a fanfiction contest to win a trip to the Winter launch party in November. All you have to do is write a piece involving a Grimm’s Fairy Tales character in the Lunar Chronicles setting. I’m just jealous that I wont get to enter- I might write the fanfiction anyway!

So that just about wraps up what I’ve been eagerly awaiting in August 2015. Watch this space for upcoming reviews of Cinder, Scarlet and Cress, and of how I have been enjoying the Chew Comics so far.
